One of the things that has always fascinated me about Ailsa Craig is the way its apparent size seems to change as you travel around the Ayrshire coast. At one moment it looks tiny and far away; you drive on, round another corner, and suddenly it seems huge and remarkably close. You know there must be a perfectly logical explanation, yet somehow it always feels a little bit magical.
In this loose watercolour, I wanted to capture that same sense of mystery — soft mist, fleeting light and an island that never seems quite as distant, or as close, as you expect.
